Greensgrow

Greensgrow

Greensgrow is an innovative Philadelphia-based urban farm project that works to make healthy, local food accessible to city dwellers and opens new options in food deserts.

This creative nonprofit grows food on the former site of an industrial area. They run farm stands, garden centers, demonstration gardens, and educational community programs that revolve around ecology and gardening. Greensgrow also keeps bees and animals, popular attractions for their educational outreach to children in the community.

Along with regular market and produce sales, Greensgrow offers a SNAP Share, a discounted option for those on public food assistance, ensuring even the most economically vulnerable have access to good food. They also work to create jobs and hire from the communities they serve.

Reclaiming neglected urban spaces, building community, and promoting local food and other green values, Greensgrow is indeed “building a better, more progressive and sustainable Philadelphia.”

The Untours Foundation stepped in early in this enterprise, and our loan kept Greensgrow afloat in its early years. Untours Foundation founder Hal Taussig helped with business advice early on. The organization has gone on to grow and thrive, expanding from its original hub in Kensington to a open a second outpost in West Philadelphia.
