Wash Cycle rides to D.C.

The Background:

Since 2010, Wash Cycle Laundry has established itself as one of the leaders in combining social entrepreneurship with green business, employing adults from vulnerable populations to work in their bicycle powered green laundry service. It earned “Best of Philly” in 2012 and the Sustainable Business Network‘s Visionary Entrepreneur Award in 2011, among other accolades.

Untours Foundation was an early supporter of Wash Cycle Laundry, with a loan in 2012 and a bridge loan in 2014. Read more about Wash Cycle Laundry.

The News:

Leigh, Director of Marketing, shared some exciting developments. First of all, Wash Cycle Laundry is expanding to Washington, D.C.! On May 27, a team of Wash Cyclists arrived in D.C. after pedaling the 120 miles from Philadelphia, the birthplace of Wash Cycle Laundry.

Founder and CEO Gabe Mandujano says,

“We’re thrilled to expand Wash Cycle Laundry from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. We’ve seen tremendous growth here in Philadelphia this year — from launching dry cleaning services, to adding electric-assist tricycles to our bicycle fleet, to welcoming team members. Now, we’re excited to see what the Nation’s Capital thinks of our bicycle laundry company.”

Gabe and company will be bringing lessons learned from Philadelphia to the bike-friendly city of D.C., and will be working with smaller outfits as well as seeking government contracts. If you live in Philly or D.C. and need laundry services, do contact Wash Cycle — they serve individuals as well!

As they launch their services in Washington D.C., Wash Cycle has rebranded, with snazzy orange and blue style. It’s also upgraded to trikes, some of them motorized to assist with hillier sections of Philly and D.C. They now have about 30 folks on staff, with about 1/3 of them cyclists. They are expecting some incredible growth this year. We love that Wash Cycle is based in Philly so we can visit them often!
