Equal Exchange is one of the largest and best known worker-owned cooperatives in the country. One of the pioneers of the Fair Trade movement, they have focused on the promotion and distribution of Fair Trade foodstuffs for over 30 years and have helped introduce the concept of Fair Trade to mainstream retail outlets and consumers.
Best known for their equitably sourced organic coffees, Equal Exchange has expanded to distribute Fair Trade tea, cocoa, sugar, chocolate, nuts, bananas, and avocados, all produced by cooperative farms in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Their business model success and advocacy have helped reshape the marketplace. Their massive distribution networks have helped bring Fair Trade goods to market across the US.
The Untours Foundation has been an ongoing supporter of their Fair Trade work and mission. Co-CEO Elizabeth Killough visited Equal Exchange in 2018 to catch up with staff and to see the new board room that is dedicated to Untours Foundation founder Hal Taussig. The board room includes a ping pong table and lots of games, a perfect tribute to our fun-loving founder, who was an early supporter of Equal Exchange and Fair Trade.
