Witness to Innocence

Witness to Innocence

Witness to Innocence (WTI) is the only national organization in the United States composed of and led by exonerated death row survivors and their family members.

The mission of WTI is to abolish the death penalty by empowering exonerated death row inmates and their loved ones to become effective leaders in the abolition movement. They are a powerful advocacy group, a voice for change who speak for prisoners on death row, sharing information and resources, and working to change laws.

As their website states, “The death row exoneree members of Witness to Innocence use their powerful stories of being wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death to reach even the most steadfast supporters of the death penalty.” Members participate in marches and speaking tours, testify in legislatures, and meet with state representatives to encourage legislative action.

The Untours Foundations made a short-term loan to WTO while they waited for a grant from the European Commission Instrument for Human Rights to be disbursed. Although the Foundation usually makes loans to businesses, not nonprofits, we are responsive and believe that our resources should be on the street working for change. If we hear of one that’s in a cash flow crunch and we have money in the bank, we rise to that occasion, especially if it is a truly world-changing non-profit like this one.
