Philadelphia Public School Notebook/Chalkbeat

We don’t normally fund nonprofits, but we recently had an opportunity to provide a bridge loan to the Chalkbeat, formerly known as the Philadelphia Public School Notebook (PPSN), an advocacy journalism organization that reports on the public school system of Philadelphia.

This independent, nonprofit news organization focuses on topics and themes of vital importance to public education in Philadelphia and serves as an information source and an empowering voice for parents, students, teachers, and other members of the community. Public education in large cities like Philadelphia is often economically segregated and underfunded, with the city’s most vulnerable families feeling the brunt of the system’s problems.

This organization’s reporting shines a light on inequities, politics, and safety within the school system. Its distinct emphasis on social justice, equity, and community is a key factor in helping ensure that all students have access to high quality learning opportunities.

While the Untours Foundation rarely invests with non-profits, we are eager to put our money into action in the service of vital issues, like education and economic justice. When we have available finds and needs arise, we are happy to lend a hand.
