OUT in Colombia

OUT in Colombia was founded on the belief that LGBTQ+ travelers deserve spaces where they feel safe, celebrated, and truly welcomed. More than just a tour operator, it creates meaningful and inclusive experiences that connect travelers with Colombia’s vibrant queer community, rich culture, and stunning landscapes. From dancing at Pride celebrations in Medellín and Bogotá to relaxing on Caribbean beaches with LGBTQ+-friendly hosts, every journey is designed to celebrate identity while supporting local communities. Founded in 2016 by Samuel Castañeda Holdren, OUT in Colombia ensures that LGBTQ+ tourism benefits the people who make Colombia such a special destination. Every trip booked supports LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, local businesses, and conservation projects, ensuring that tourism strengthens communities and fosters inclusion. Recognized by the IGLTA Foundation and the TreadRight Foundation, OUT in Colombia is setting a new standard for LGBTQ+ travel that goes beyond tourism and creates lasting impact.

The OUT in Colombia Origin Story

When Samuel Castañeda Holdren moved to Medellín, Colombia, he saw how tourism could be a powerful tool for economic opportunity and cultural exchange. With a background in social work and sustainability leadership, he had spent years advocating for marginalized communities and recognized that LGBTQ+ travelers often face unique challenges when exploring the world—challenges that can make some destinations feel unwelcoming or inaccessible. He wanted to change that by creating travel opportunities that were both affirming and impactful. Sam founded OUT in Colombia to connect LGBTQ+ travelers with Colombia’s diverse communities while ensuring that tourism dollars supported local businesses, artists, and conservation efforts. His vision was to build a company that not only provided unforgettable experiences but also contributed to a more inclusive and sustainable travel industry.

How OUT in Colombia Is Making A Positive Impact

OUT in Colombia ensures that every trip booked supports local communities, LGBTQ+ businesses, and conservation efforts. By partnering with LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, Afro-Colombian artisans, and local organizations, the company keeps tourism dollars where they matter most. Through the Cocora Alliance, a nonprofit founded by OUT in Colombia, a portion of every tour booking funds community-led conservation projects. These initiatives include reforesting the Cocora Valley to protect the endangered wax palm tree and environmental education programs that promote biodiversity and climate resilience.

Beyond conservation, OUT in Colombia is committed to social impact initiatives. The company supports “Más Que Tres Letras,” a program that provides safe spaces, health resources, and education for people living with HIV/AIDS in Medellín, helping to combat stigma and improve access to essential services. Sustainability is woven into every experience, from visiting responsible coffee farms to exploring community-led conservation projects. These tours raise awareness about Colombia’s environmental challenges while actively supporting solutions.

OUT in Colombia also plays a key role in LGBTQ+ advocacy within tourism, working with national partners to ensure that Colombia is recognized as a leading inclusive destination.
