Monique Greenwood from Akwaaba Bed and Breakfast Inns uses tourism to create a positive impact for the local community as well as for travelers. Akwaaba, which means “welcome” in a native dialect of Ghana, was originally launched in Brooklyn and now has locations in the Poconos and West Philadelphia. As one of the few black-owned bed and breakfasts in the United States, Monique has been determined to make Akwaaba a comfortable environment for travelers from all backgrounds. As just one example of this intentional strategy, for every Time or Fortune magazine on an Akwaaba coffee table, there is an Ebony or Essence magazine as well.
