Philly Compost is a woman-owned business using commercial food waste to make beautiful compost. One of its compost sites is in the heart of an urban Philadelphia neighborhood for all to see. They are developing a profitable, workable model for other cities to emulate.

Philly Compost’s motto is “In Soil We Trust,” and indeed, creating compost creates healthier, more productive soils for both the home gardener and our food producers. The other side of Philly Compost — picking up hotel and restaurant scraps that would otherwise be tossed in the garbage — gets food waste out of landfills, which has enormous environmental and financial costs.

As you can see from the photos, a significant portion of Philly Compost’s pickup service is bicycle powered! Our 2013 funding is helping them kick off a larger operation to serve more businesses eager to have their food waste composted. Their clients range from The Philadelphia Reserve Bank to HipCityVeg.
