As reported in the nifty new online magazine called Flying Kite, the City of Philadelphia is now working with social entrepreneurs and innovative businesses to help improve the city.

The first project is called FastFWD, “an urban innovation refinery.” With $1 million from Bloomberg’s “Mayors Challenge”, FastFWD will initially tackle Public Safety collaboratively with entrepreneurs seeking a boost of capital for their projects.

Right now, FastFWD is “looking for early stage innovators who are committed to solving the toughest problems and creating market-based delivery models that can be replicated nationally or globally.” Sound familiar? This goal is very similar to what Untours Foundation has been doing for quite a few years. In addition, we choose business models that are environmentally sustainable and Fair Trade. It’s a high bar, but it sure is exciting to see the many different ways that creative ideas and smart business can tackle social issues and make the world a better place.

Founding partners of FastFWD are GoodCompany, Wharton Social Impact Initiative and the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics.
